Each year New Perspectives sponsors unique events for the East Palo Alto community and the students in our program.

Youth Prevention Retreat

This event is a topic-specific outing designed to confront the challenges facing students. Previous retreat topics have included substance abuse, violence prevention, conflict resolution and communication. Students who attend the retreat are presented with tools and support to manage these challenges. Additionally, a subset of this group will be trained as peer educators and will present this material in the Ravenswood School District.
 

Community Carnival

 

New Perspectives has sponsored The Cesar Chavez Community Carnival since 1998. The intent of this carnival is to provide a fun afternoon for the community of East Palo Alto, and to also let them know of the many community organizations that exist. In past years, as many as 30 community organizations have been present and occupied booths where they have had give-a-ways, games, literature about their programs and staff to speak with members of the community. The turn out for this event ranges from 2,000 to 5,000.

Rides and games are provided for a nominal fee. Youth have the opportunity to earn prize tickets and redeem them for prizes. Food is also available for purchase. Information on community organizations is free and is reinforced with reward tickets.

This carnival provides an incredible opportunity for us to meet the community, and share ideas and resources. Help us make this event as comprehensive as possible for the community!
