Nairobi East Palo Alto Legacy
Historical Information:
The Nairobi East Palo Alto Legacy reunion is an event scheduled for July 23rd - 25th to commemorate and celebrate the unique community that was Nairobi, California. Nairobi was a community of like minded, dynamic and brilliant people that set out to create a different life for themselves, their families and their community. They set out in a time of incredible national and international change, to create a place that was reflective of their African heritage, working class sensibilities, and revolutionary spirit.

The principle institution of the Nairobi movement was the Nairobi Schools, which offered a complete educational experience, from the preschool level on up to a two year junior college. The entire curriculum was centered on the principles of community empowerment and change. All of the students were actively involved in not only their education, but on transforming the community into a place that was reflective of this new spirit of change in the African American community and the world.
Nairobi was a magnet for those involved in the struggle and those who wanted to be involved in the struggle. There were many important organizations and individuals involved in the Nairobi movement, SNCC, Kwame Ture, Angela Davis, and the Black Panther Party to name a few, but Nairobi was a fiercely independent community, one that struggled for and achieved on very high levels; self definition and self determination.
This reunion is meant to be a tribute to that spirit of independence, those freedom fighters that have made the transition and as a way of "passing the torch" from those that remain here to the youth that have been trained to carry on the life long struggle for liberation, self determination and freedom for all oppressed peoples.
