California Bank and Trust
Launching the New
Chamber Of Commerce
Contributed by: Dennis ParkerThe brand new East Palo Alto-Belle Haven Chamber of Commerce (EPABHCC) held its very successful inaugural mixer on February 27, 2003. East Palo Alto's California Bank and Trust was filled with well-wishers who were treated to the mellow sounds of the jazz combo Potential, and substantial hors d'oeuvres and drinks. It was fitting and proper for this memorable event to take place at the California Bank and Trust.
The bank was celebrating its first anniversary in the City of East Palo Alto, symbolizing the new opportunities in the City.A self-employed contractor in hardhat and work boots rubbed shoulders with an architect and a real estate broker. Many attendees exchanged business cards and some beamed them over their handheld computers. The diversity crossed all economic levels and ethnic groups.

Distinguished visitors included Barbara Mouton, the first Mayor of East Palo Alto; Pat Foster, the current Mayor; and Rose Jacobs Gibson, President of the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors. Mayor Nicholas Jellins represented Menlo Park, whose Belle Haven and Willows businesses are participants in the new Chamber
The East Palo Alto-Belle Haven Chamber of Commerce was formerly the East Palo Alto Business and Merchants Association, which began in 1994. It is a non-profit voluntary organization dedicated to making businesses more profitable and making East Palo Alto and Belle Haven better places to live. Historically, the Merchants Association accepted only business members, but the new Chamber is expanding its membership to include non-profit organizations and individuals. Those who join will receive the benefits of networking and referrals, publicity for their business, information workshops and seminars, mentoring, and advocacy.
The EPABHCC senior staff includes Board Chair J.T. Turner, Vice-Chair James Wilmore, Secretary Barbara Noparstak, and Treasurer Paul Bains.
EPABHCC is recruiting for new members and volunteers for its committees: Advocacy, Finance, Fund Development, Membership, and Professional Development.
