Illegal garage conversions   [forward as email]

It an effort to allow garages to be used for living space, let us not ignore the impact on the neighborhoods. If garages are to be converted owners should have to provide adequate parking space for all residents. The single family homes that will become multifamily residents and should also be required to register with the rent control board. This city has always tried to provide protection for tenants and should extend such protections to units with converted garages. How much are these families paying for the "garage" space they occupy? How much is sufficient space for each person. How many individuals will be allowed to live in what size space? Will there be adequate sanitary facilities. A friend of mine purchased a home that had been allowed to be "overcrowded" and found after several months and hundreds of dollars that a closet had been converted to a toilet, without being tied into the sewer line. The waste was being dumbed under the house. How will such be controlled? I am well aware that many garages around the city have already been converted and are serving as living quarters for families. They should be inspected and owners should have to bring these new units up to code. In our haste to support these families, let's be sure we are requiring safe, sanitary living conditions for them !

What you're saying is so true..But it really hit when you speak about people that rent out their garage or rooms or just to many family members in one house should have parking spaces for their renters and that shouldn't mean parking in-front of your neighbors house which is starting a lot of confusion and friction among neighbors, when you drive down the streets you see so many cars parked on the street and its from one house 5,6,7,10 cars at one house somethings needs to be done..maybe each house should have stickers color code or something to park in front of your own house , I just know something needs to be done, it seems the city council or mayor should have some suggestions or even to look into this matter.maybe we should have parking permits on our streets in order that you have a right to park in front of your own house.

I converted my garage to a nice room and then let a person move in. Believe it or not I DID NOT think I was doing anything wrong. I have now been told that I have to revert the garage back to its former condition. What do I do about the renter?

Should I just give her money back to her or what must I do?
