Volunteer group challenges East Palo Alto in reducing carbon emissions
By Selagi Nimo Lesu'i
E.P.A. Staff WriterIn honor of Earth Day, a volunteer organization located in Menlo Park is challenging you! Do you think you have what it takes? What are the requirements in order to participate in this challenge? Your mind, feet/bike, and lots of water!
This challenge is titled as the Drive Less Challenge. The Drive Less Challenge, "is a friendly social competition to reduce the amount of driving alone - the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the Bay Area." 45% - 47% of the carbon emission comes from cars. If all that comes from our cars alone, surely the percentage of the other sources of carbon entering into the air, must be frightening!
In case you haven't heard, carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas that enters into our atmosphere and, sadly, gets stuck into our atmosphere causing the earth to be in the crisis known as the greenhouse effect. The goal of this challenge is to try and reduce the amount of carbon that enters into the air.
How can you be a contestant in this challenge? Visit their website,http://drivelesschallenge.com/, and register. After registering, you can post stories and share them with other individuals whom are participating in this extravaganza. You'll be able to relate and experience what other people are seeing and feeling around the Bay Area. You are not alone!
This challenge starts April 22nd and ends May 6th. During this 2 week challenge, you will be challenged... to keep track of your mileage. Simple? Doubt it. So, what do you think? Do you think you can handle it? Try it! I wish you the best of luck and God bless.
