File Storage

The File Storage section provides users with the ability to post and share files with their coworkers, friends, and family. Files can be uploaded and collected into virtual file folders. Not only can you upload files, you can also make private and public folders to place files in, add descriptions to your files, and view or download files stored by others.

Note: Uploaded files must meet epa.net's acceptable use guidelines.

This is a brief overview of how to submit an event to the File Storage section of epa.net.

Uploading Files and Creating Folders

  1. From the main page, click the link on the left side navigation bar that says "File Storage"
  2. Click the folder link marked "Community Uploads".
  3. Select the appropriate folder to store your file.
  4. Click on the "Create a new folder" link. This will take you to a new page where you can add a folder name. Note: You should always create a folder before adding files. This will help you find your files later.
  5. Give the folder a name and click the "Create" button. This will take you into the folder you just created. You can now "Upload" files into your folder. If you will be adding many types of files, you may want to create sub folders in the folder you created. This will help you keep your files organized.
  6. Next, click on the "Upload a file" link. This will take you to a new page where you can browse for a file to add from your hard drive, add a description, and add title for the file. An example of a description would be what the file contains.
  7. Click the "Browse" button. This will allow you to find the file on your hard drive to upload.
  8. By clicking the file link, you will go to a page where you can edit the name of the file and upload new versions. The link will be displayed again on this page. If you click this link, you will download the file.

Downloading Files

  1. From the main page, click the link on the left side navigation bar that says "File Storage."
  2. Select the appropriate folder where a file you wish to download may be stored.
  3. Find the file link you wish to download and click it.
  4. After you click this link, you will be taken to a page where you can click the "Download" link. Note: If you are using Internet Explorer and have Microsoft Office Suite installed, Word, PowerPoint and Excel documents will open in the Internet Explorer browser Window. To save these, just use the save feature under the "File" menu bar title.
  5. Be sure to click on the "Back" button to get back to epa.net.

Deleting Files and Folders

  1. Only users with proper permission levels can delete files from the system.
  2. You must remove all files from a folder before it can be deleted.
  3. If you do not have permission to delete, you will not see any links for deleting files.
  4. Click on the "Delete this file (including all versions)" to delete a file.
  5. A confirmation screen appears that says, "Are you sure you want to delete this file. This action can not be reversed." Click on the "Yes, delete" button.

Setting Folder Permissions

Permissions must be set when you are creating the folder if you do not want the public to see the contents of the folder. Click the "Modify permissions on this folder"link to set who will be allowed to view the files immediately after you create the folder. This will take you to a page that shows who can see the files. By clicking the "Don't inherit permissions" link, you prevent the public from seeing the files in your folder. Note: System administrators are listed. They will always be able to see the contents of your album.

We recommend permission setting for advanced users only.
