La Celebración del Cinco de Mayo 2003, y el Comité Latino

Durante el mes de mayo, el Comité Latino organizó dos eventos
comunitarios con mucho éxito. El domingo 4 de mayo se llevó
a cabo el Desfile del Cinco de Mayo y el Festival Latino 2003,
con una asistencia de casi 3,000 personas, la gran mayoría
de East Palo Alto y Belle Haven, pero incluyendo personas de
otras ciudades de la Peninsula.

Cinco de Mayo Celebration 2003 and the Comité Latino

During the month of May, the Comité Latino organized two very successful community events. On Sunday May 4th, the Cinco de Mayo Parade and Festival Latino 2003 took place, with an estimated attendance of close to 3,000 people, mostly from East Palo Alto and Belle Haven but also from throughout the Peninsula.

Communities face loss together and we can also remember and heal together. The loss of Luseane and Hopate Sanft in a fire last Christmas saddened all of East Palo Alto. Here Vaatofu Masifilo, age 13, a classmate and friend of Luseane’s at the Girls’ Club of the Mid-Peninsula, shares a remembrance of Luseane and Hopate.
We publish this in Tongan, Spanish and English to let the Sanft family and the Tongan community know that we are all with them.

At a meeting last fall, Maxine Sykes, MSW, with Family Support of the Mid-Peninsula in East Palo Alto, responded to a question posed by Dr. Michael Greenberg, Assistant Health Officer for San Mateo County Health Services Agency. “What are your concerns for children in your community?”
Maxine replied, “We’re most concerned about asthma among our children because that’s what I see and what our home visitors see. Some kids in this community seem to have colds year round...
