1st Annual East Palo Alto Black History Film
Festival
|
East Palo Alto’s first film festival will take place President’s Day Weekend
at the Community Church Auditorium.
This free event will feature some of the first Black movies ever made,
African cinema, and revolutionary classics.
Discussions will follow these thought provoking films.

Vietnamese New Year in East Palo Alto
In 1979, Lan Tran was one
of about 1,000 refugees sponsored by the Vietnamese
Buddhist Church in East Palo Alto.
She lived
nearby the church, located on Donohoe Street,
for several years with her family.
"When we first came here, it was a hut, grass
and dirt -- hard dirt," Tran said.
"Many of the families nearby would pick up
trash and clean the place up."
Through the years, the church has undergone
many transformations.

Rose Jacobs Gibson
Monday January 6, 2003
at 6pm, Supervisor Rose Jacobs Gibson stood at the
podium of the Canada College auditorium and noted a
significant moment in the history of San Mateo County.
"Seven years ago my predecessor, Ruben Barrales, became the first Latino
to serve as President of the Board of Supervisors," she said.
"Tonight, I am honored to become the first African American to hold this post".

Community Elects New One East Palo Alto Board Members

Community Update
On January 28, 2003, members
of the East Palo Alto community met
in the City/County building to elect members
to the One East Palo Alto (OEPA) Board of Directors.
Among those elected are five incumbents: Luis Avelar,
Refugio Huizar, Arthur Lim, Barbara Noparstak, and Richard Tatum.
New members elected to the Board are Salvador Chavez,
Bernardo Huerta, and Alisha Parker.
