East Palo Alto Celebrates the Life of Cesar Chavez

Cesar Chavez

A wiggly line of kindergarteners made their way across the stage of the Cesar Chavez Academy auditorium.

On the floor in front of the stage, Green Oaks Academy teacher Maria Berruet hoisted up her accordion.

Then students and teacher sang together the anthem of Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers:
"De colores, de colores..."

Una línea de estudiantes del kinder se formó enfrente del escenario del auditorio de la Academia César Chávez.

Al frente del escenario, en el piso, la maestra de la Academia de Green Oaks, Maria Berruet, levantó su acordión, enseguida los estudiantes y la maestra empezaron a cantar el himno de César Chávez y los Campesinos Unidos.

Empowerment Research!
to Provide the Answers

East Palo Alto’s Community Development Institute (CDI)
has launched Empowerment Research!, a unique program to provide low-income communities of color with the research tools needed to improve quality of life.

The problems of daily life, and the changes needed, are usually apparent to residents of East Palo Alto and similar communities.

What’s lacking is the know-how to collect and communicate data that makes the case to foundations, government and other channels for resources and funding.

Health Clinic Changes Name

South County Community Health Center, based in East Palo Alto, has a new name. Since many people assumed that it must be one of the County’s public health clinics, the Board decided to eliminate confusion by changing the name.

As of April 1 Ravenswood Family Health Center is the name. The location, telephone, email addresses, and fax numbers stay the same.

However South County Community Health Center, Inc. is still the legal name until the amendment to the Articles of Incorporation is complete.

An Interview with
Oscar Rivera

Everybody knows there are some unique individuals in this town. With this issue, EPA.net begins a regular new feature in this corner: portraits of East Palo Alto residents.

We plan to tell two stories a month for now. If you know someone who has a story that needs to be told, get in touch with us at content@epa.net or 650/322-1134 ext 13.

This portrait will be of Oscar Rivera. Oscar grew up in East Palo Alto and is an artist and active member of the Free at Last community, supporting other residents in their recovery.

Oscar's story is also timely for Cesar Chavez' birthday. As a young man he caught the spirit of the times, going to United Farm Worker rallies, marching and painting murals reflecting those struggles.

Reported by Dennis Parker, Community Advocate

Report to East Palo Alto City
Council Meeting, March 18, 2003.

Peter Reid, Director of the Stanford Community Law Clinic (the Clinic) gave the report.

They recently moved into a space at 2117 University Avenue (formerly Drew Center), situated together with Community Legal Services (CLS) in East Palo Alto, and the Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County.

This is a nice, congenial arrangement for providing high-quality services for residents of East Palo Alto and the surrounding community.
