EPA Senior Center Produce Market Celebrates 1st Anniversary By Laura Savage
With cuts in social services, medical coverage and housing aid for the
elderly, it's nice to know that there are programs that look to ease
financial pressures for seniors. The local East Palo Alto Senior Center
Produce Market, just completing its first year, is one of them.
The Market was established by the Episcopal Homes Foundation, EPA CAN DO and
the East Palo Alto Senior Center. However it is now run entirely by Senior
Center volunteers led by Mrs. Lorraine Holmes. The objective is to provide
seniors with affordable produce in a convenient way, but the Market is also
open to the whole community.

A few months ago One East Palo Alto (OEPA) held a press conference to release the report from a survey by the Community Development Institute on residents'
perceptions of crime and public safety. Local headlines trumpeted the findings: EPA residents felt unsafe and their top crime concern was drugs.
This was news? Well, I guess the news was in the numbers: a full 65% of residents felt unsafe or very unsafe in their own neighborhoods.
But another more hopeful finding was also documented: 62% of residents who knew about block clubs thought they were good or very good
at addressing crime issues.
