The True Lessons of Boxing
By Mikaya Strickling
I could never see myself boxing. Getting into a ring knowing that I am going to get hit with
someone's "best shot" doesn't really appeal to me. But after talking with local boxing coach
Johnnie Gray I now know that boxing is about a lot more than hitting or getting hit.
Coach Gray runs the youth boxing program in East Palo Alto's Bell Street Gym.
He explained to me that boxing, as he sees it, has to with giving it your all,

“moral fiber” or character that is missing in the lives of too many of our youth.

A message to the community from Police Chief Ronald Davis
The recent shooting incidents have increased levels of fear within the community
and caused many residents to reflect to the '90s when East Palo Alto was dubbed
the "murder capital" of the United States. As a community, it is good that we reflect on
the past because there are many lessons to take from both our successes and failures.
However, we must guard against our reflection turning into a level of fear that
negatively changes our lives or diminishes our resolve.
