Scenes from Juneteenth in East Palo Alto 2005
El Significado de Juneteenth

Start Up

By the Juneteenth Committee

The Juneteenth Festival was really a good one this year and we need more support for this kind of event because it brings the community together. It allows people both to reflect on the issues effecting the community and to show a positive image. It's an important event that should be continued every year.

The Committee worked hard this year. In some ways Juneteenth helped pull the community together in a period where we had been having a flare up of violence. People came out to enjoy the music, listen to what the speakers had to say and greet old friends.

For African Americans, Juneteenth is a holiday we should all celebrate as opposed to just the Fourth of July. Especially it means a great deal for our young people to know the history of enslavement and freedom that Juneteenth speaks of.

"Letter to the Community"
sent to residents

Los residentes estan invitados "para charlar con el jefe"
este sábado Junio 25, 2005

"I believe the first steps necessary to restore public trust and confidence are openness and communication."

So states new East Palo Alto Police Chief Ron Davis in a "Letter to the Community" sent out this week. In the letter the new Chief describes immediate steps he has taken to respo nd to the recent increase in violence. He goes on to describe strategic law enforcement steps he plans to take in the months to come.

However, Chief Davis puts law enforcement in a broader contest when he says, "For long-term crime and violence reduction to occur, the police must work in partnership with the co mmunity to identify and solve problems."
