San Mateo County Supervisor Rose Jacobs Gibson is no stranger to crime and violence.
From 1992 to 1999 she was on the East Palo Alto City Council and played a major role in the regional effort to quell
crack-related violence in the early 90s.

A visit to my parents homeland
By Armando Arroyo
Not too long ago I decided to take a trip to the state of Michoacan
to gain some awareness about my parents' origins. Growing up I have
always had nostalgic dreams of someday returning to Michoacan,
known throughout Mexico for its landscape of lakes and mountains.
Mexico offers a plethora of fascinating cultural beauty.
No doubt in East Palo Alto that same influence is seen
throughout the city. So many residents here come from Michoacan that
from the local markets to the foods we eat this heritage connects us all.

County seeks resident input for new provider selection
By Regina Thompson
Staff Coordinator for One East Palo Alto
San Mateo County has had a long standing commitment to support underserved
communities with funding for "core emergency services" such as food,
transportation, housing, advocacy and other essentials.
In a city like East Palo Alto, provision of these services becomes a lifeline for many.
One East Palo Alto, in conjunction with the County, the City, El Concilio
and the Peninsula Community Foundation, convened a community meeting on Saturday,
December 11th, to seek input on future delivery of core emergency services
in East Palo Alto. Over 100 residents turned out to speak their minds.

¿POR QUÉ TOMAR El TIMEPO PARA RECORDAR?
By Mary Flamer
Each year, as we approach January 15th, the birthday
of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., I find myself asking
this question, "Why do we need to remember Dr. King's birthday?"
Is it because his life was ended at 39 years of age? Do we remember
Dr. King because of the many times he went to jail, or do we remember
his non-violent doctrine of passive resistance?
As an African American, I believe that there is not just one reason to remember Dr. King.
