East Palo Alto Residents Voice Strong Opinions about Core Emergency Services

County seeks resident input for new provider selection
By Regina Thompson
Staff Coordinator for One East Palo Alto
San Mateo County has had a long standing commitment to support underserved
communities with funding for "core emergency services" such as food,
transportation, housing, advocacy and other essentials.
In a city like East Palo Alto, provision of these services becomes a lifeline for many.
For years San Mateo County Human Services Agency contracted with
the Family Support Center to provide these services in East Palo Alto.
However, Family Support Center shut down last fall due to financial problems.
Since then, El Concilio of San Mateo County has been providing core emergency
services on an interim basis. The Human Services Agency will contract with
a new service provider by April 1, 2005.
One East Palo Alto, in conjunction with the County, the City, El Concilio
and the Peninsula Community Foundation, convened a community meeting on Saturday,
December 11th, to seek input on future delivery of core emergency services
in East Palo Alto. Over 100 residents turned out to speak their minds.

¿POR QUÉ TOMAR El TIMEPO PARA RECORDAR?
By Mary F. Flamer
Each year, as we approach January 15th, the birthday
of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., I find myself asking

Dr. King because of the many times he went to jail, or do we remember
his non-violent doctrine of passive resistance?
As an African American, I believe that there is not just one reason to remember Dr. King.
